Bande de sons

About

A composer and sound designer based between Paris and Brittany, Sylvain Hellio has been developing a body of work in sound creation since 2008 — spanning video games, podcasts, live performance and songwriting. Through Bande de sons, he composes, produces and crafts sonic worlds designed for moving image, narrative and pure listening.

Portrait of Sylvain Hellio

Background

Sylvain Hellio began playing piano as a child, then guitar, and developed an early interest in writing, improvisation and performing. After a first chapter in rock music, he turned to jazz, studying at the conservatory before pursuing musicology at the Sorbonne and the IMFP in Salon-de-Provence.

Back in Paris, he expanded his practice into electronic production and computer-assisted composition. In the early 2000s, he co-founded the pop duo Yubaba Smith & Fortune, which released several EPs and an album featuring Just Like A Ghost, aired on Radio Nova.

Under the name Bande de sons, he has worked since 2008 as a composer and sound designer for video games, children’s publishing, podcasts and narrative formats. His credits include the original scores for Big Bang Mini, Soulbubbles, Jazz: A Trump’s Journey, Maestro! Jump In Music, Replay and Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit, published by SEGA.

His work has received several awards, including the Milthon for Best Original Music, a prize from the French Ministry of Culture, and the DevGAMM Best Audio Award.

In children’s audio and publishing, he has composed music and sound design for the Histoires Animées and La Grande Plongée collections (Albin Michel Jeunesse), as well as numerous audiobooks. He also created the podcast series Mythes et Légendes, produced for Spotify, which has consistently ranked among the most-listened programmes since 2021.

Since 2021, his work has increasingly reached into live performance and songwriting. He composed and directed original scores for the cine-concerts of the Court-Métrange festival in Rennes, then wrote the soundtrack for La Maladie de Sachs, performed in Paris and at the Avignon Off festival in 2024. In parallel, he released L’Homme du bois, a French chanson EP, in 2023.

Today, Sylvain Hellio divides his time between songwriting, screen composition and sound creation through Bande de sons. In 2025, he completed his DEM in classical writing under David Lamaze.

The Bande de sons studio

The studio

All work happens in a dedicated space, from initial concept to final delivery (arrangement, sound design, production, mixing).

The approach is hybrid: acoustic sources — guitars, analogue synthesizer, bass, drums — captured with precision through a Neve 88M interface, alongside an extensive palette of virtual instruments, orchestral sample libraries and audio processing tools.

For video game projects, audio implementation is also handled in-house (FMOD, Wwise).

For larger-scale or more specific projects, the work can draw on outside expertise: recording studios, 5.1 mixing, orchestra or chamber ensemble sessions.
